The Vieux Château Certan is well named. Old, it is!
Indeed, one finds references to this legend of Pomerol as early as 1785 on a map by the geographer Belleyme.
The wine-growing estate of Vieux Château Certan occupies 14 hectares of a terrace of Günzian gravel to the south-east of the Pomerol appellation. Its grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (60%) and supplemented by Cabernet Franc (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). As respectful of tradition as of the environment, the estate is committed to working its land in accordance with the principles of sustainable viticulture.
Always respectful of tradition, Vieux Château Certan harvests the grapes by hand, followed by vinification in wooden vats before maturing in oak barrels without yeast or artifice. As Alexandre Thienpont says: "the wine must tell its own story, not ours".
In the glass, Vieux Château Certan 1993 has a beautiful dark ruby colour with a brownish rim. It distils an elegant bouquet of ripe red fruits wrapped in notes of undergrowth, dried herbs and a touch of earth.
On the palate, Vieux Château Certan 1993 offers a light and airy attack. The mid-palate reveals a velvety texture with delicate tannins, bursting with juicy red and black fruit aromas that grow and evolve to a spicy, savoury finish.
