Located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, in the heart of the Saint Estèphe appellation, the Château Ormes de Pez vineyard covers 35 hectares of clay and limestone soils planted with 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, the remaining 9% being shared between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The 2017 vintage could have been very difficult for Château Ormes de Pez. Indeed, the frost at the end of April hit one of the parcels with full force but fortunately, this single affected parcel did not prevent the other plants from benefiting from optimal ripeness at harvest time.
Made from a traditional Médoc blend, with 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and only 1% Petit Verdot, Château Ormes de Pez 2017 was then aged in 45% new oak barrels.
On the nose, Château Ormes de Pez 2017 looks more like a Pauillac than a Saint Estèphe. It distills a charming and elegant bouquet, full of red and black berry, blackcurrant, cherry, spice and cedar notes.
Once on the palate, Château Ormes de Pez 2017 shows a balanced attack filled with an abundance of ripe and velvety tannins. In the middle of the palate, red and black fruits emerge, intermingling with tannins and melting with oak notes until leaving an aftertaste with impressive persistence.
Château Ormes de Pez will be a great success of the 2017 vintage. Its present characteristics seem to destinate it to a relatively long guard. It should reach its full potential in the next 20 years.
