For the 1989 vintage, the flagship estate of the Pauillac appellation is decorated by the famous Georg Baselitz who, for the occasion, created a provocative illustration associating Mouton Rothschild's two rams with the fall of the Berlin Wall and adding the following words: "Drüben sein jetzt hier" (The other side is now with us).
Château Mouton Rothschild 1989 is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. It has a superb dark ruby colour slightly lighter on the edge of the glass.
On the nose, the 1989 vintage of Mouton Rothschild reveals a surprisingly evolved bouquet, distilling woody aromas of cedar, lots of sweet black fruit, graphite and toasty oak notes.
In the mouth, Château Mouton Rothschild 1989 is sober, medium-bodied and offers a soft, rounded tannic structure.
Sweet on the attack, Mouton Rothschild 1989 covers the palate with aromas of black berries, leather, mushrooms, chocolate, spices and truffle before finishing on a long finish with remarkable persistence.
An underrated vintage, Château Mouton Rothschild is a delicious wine at maturity. It can still age a few decades without weakening.
