The origins of Château les Grands Chênes date back to 1880, but it was not until nearly a century later that it acquired international renown (the 1990 vintage won an award in London).
The property was bought in 1998 by the famous Bernard Magrez, with the objective of raising it to the top of the Médoc appellation. Five years later, in 2003, Château les Grands Chênes was awarded the title of Cru Bourgeois Supérieur!

Located in Saint-Christoly du Médoc, the vineyard covers 12 hectares of gravelly and clay-limestone soils. The grape varieties are essentially divided between Merlot (50%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), supplemented by a small amount of Cabernet Franc (5%). The vines are about thirty years old on average.

As for the other estates of Bernard Magrez, the property is managed in sustainable agriculture, respecting the environment, using traditional methods and limiting chemical inputs as much as possible.
The manual harvest is followed by a double sorting, before a plot by plot vinification in thermo-regulated wooden vats. The wines benefit from a cold maceration followed by fermentation in vats lasting 20 to 30 days. The wines are then aged in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months depending on the needs of the vintage.

In the glass, Château les Grands Chênes 2019 has a magnificent deep purple color, almost black, and distils a rich and powerful nose of cooked and jammy black fruits mixed with notes of tar, wood and a subtle touch of freshly cut lavender.
On the palate, 2019 0Château les Grands Chênes offers a moderately full-bodied attack. The crisp black fruit aromas unfold their incredible freshness in the mid-palate, supported by a firm and grainy tannic structure before finishing on a long finish, deliciously tinged with a salty touch.
