Château Angélus is one of the Grands Crus Class A of the Saint-Emilion appellation since 2012. L'Angélus had previously obtained the classification of 1er grand cru classé, then 1er grand cru classé B a few decades later. From now on, Château Angélus has joined the very exclusive club of Saint-Emilion's Grand Cru Classé A, following the example of Cheval Blanc.
It was the Bouard de Laforest family who, in the 18th century, acquired Château Angélus. Since then, it has remained the owner. Since the 18th century, the estate has evolved and it was precisely in the 20th century that the Château Angélus estate expanded, gradually becoming the estate of today. The vineyard of Château Angélus now covers nearly 40 hectares.
Château Angelus owes its unique style to several factors: First, in Angelus, selection and rigour are essential to achieve excellence: narrow sorting of grapes, renovation, etc.
Another major fact: Château Angélus contains an almost equal blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a hint of Cabernet Sauvignon. These grape varieties give it finesse, generosity and a very particular style, characterized by vegetal, empyreumatic and mineral aromas. The importance of Cabernet Franc in the composition of Angelus is a characteristic that gives the Angelus, this unique breed. Another element of the terroir: the subsoil on which the vines reside is composed of sand, clay and limestone.
Château Angélus has a second wine: the Carillon de l'Angélus.
Having many great vintages, Bordeaux is a land of wine! Historic site of Bordeaux wine production, the Gironde department in Aquitaine is known for its internationally renowned vintages.
It groups together many Appellations of Controlled Origin such as Médoc, Graves or Bordeaux Supérieur. Although this is not the only reason for the important viticulture in this area of the South-West, it benefits from climatic conditions and the diversity of soil texture, which make the quality of Bordeaux wines. However, the reason for the establishment of the wine trade in this region is above all very ancient and historical. The origins of the Bordeaux vineyard go back to the 1st century, when the vines began to be planted; but it is mainly in the Middle Ages that trade around Bordeaux wine developed, due to the rise of navigation and rivers facilitating it in this region.
The last notable vintage, 2009 was particularly successful for the Bordeaux wine as a whole. It has left its mark on the minds of amateurs with its quality and taste, whether white or red.
Bordeaux wines are renowned all over the world for their incomparable aromas. Its grands crus are made up of a judicious blend of grape varieties characteristic of the region's wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenère, for the red; Sauvignon, Muscadelle, and Sémillon for the white. Other accessory grape varieties are also used for white wines, but in limited quantities: Ugni Blanc, Ondenc, Merlot Blanc and Colombard.
