Alsace 1988

  • The Gewurztraminer and the Riesling, emblems of Alsatian vineyards

Situated in the north-east of France, Alsace is a region whose wines are typical. Like Gewurztraminer and Riesling, Alsace wines are mainly white, sparkling and sparkling. Alsace, however, produces a red and rosé wine: Pinot Noir. The special feature of Alsace wines is that they take their name from the grape variety that makes them up: Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat d' Alsace, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir. They also refer to varietal wines, i. e. wines made from a single grape variety. Gewurztraminer and Riesling are the best known wines of this vineyard; however, there are two blended wines in Alsace, Edelzwicker and Gentil, wines composed of different grape varieties.
Alsace is made up of 3 appellations of controlled origin: Alsace, Alsace grand cru and Crémant d' Alsace. Additional information may also be added to their labels: late harvest and selection of noble grapes, which means that the wines have had late harvests or that their grapes, necessarily affected by the fungus "botrytis cinerea", have been selected by successive sorting.
Alsatian viticulture dates back to Roman times and has developed over the centuries. However, it was in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance that it established its reputation. This one will experience ups and downs according to the periods of history that Alsace goes through. Wars and demographic falls in particular have disrupted its rise, but the 20th century will mark the beginning of its rebirth, notably thanks to the development of appellations of origin controlled between 1962 and 1976.

    Wines of Alsace

The diversity of the Alsatian soils, the climate and the typical grape varieties, give Alsace wines fruity and sweet aromas, ideal to accompany white meats, seafood and fish, or for aperitif.
